I am in the middle of painting a large painting, it is such a change from painting on small boards, I am used to finishing a painting in one or two days and find painting large, a bit tedious. I guess in this day and age of instant gratification one can easily lose the patience that is needed to finish larger projects getting bored quickly. So I thought that I needed to paint a smaller one in between, to give myself a break, hence this row of pretty apples set up on my kitchen counter became the subject of this elongated still life.

This pretty kitty belongs to a friend of my daughter's.
She has the longest fur and when she stretched out on a Flokarti rug she almost disappeared into it, if it wasn't for the black bits showing where she was.

Loved painting this one although I found it hard not to keep 'improving' it and fiddling and changing stuff, whether it really improves my paintings I don't know! I am trying to build up a body of work - cat paintings so that I will have plenty to choose from when I exhibit in the summer.

I have been labouring on this painting for days now and I have finally declared it finished!
I had been looking for a piece of dark wood to use in some of my still life set ups, and have searched everywhere, even looked in skips! Then one day I was in my local charity shop and found an old oak drawer it was full of stuff on the floor and almost didn't notice it, it was very dirty and dilapidated and I bought it for a Euro. Once home I cleaned it up and oiled some of the surfaces with olive oil and left some dirty. I thought that it would be perfect surface to set these pears on, for this very tightly painted still life.

I am painting a 3 pear still life at the moment which is driving me mad, so yesterday evening I decided to paint something loose and fun to cheer me up :)) which it did, a lovely colourful rowing boat moored and waiting for somebody to take it out for a row. Nice thick paint, loose and fast!

Painted this for the Paintworks challenge which was a white object on a patterned ground. The worst thing was getting the shape of the teapot and cup right and painting all the flowers on the material!

Another boat scene painted with a palette knife. These little fishing boats were harboured in a fishing port close to where I used to live in Spain. You can see the mounds of neatly stacked fishing nets on the narrow docks ready for the next days action. When I used to walk my dog along the beach I could watch the little boats chugging out to sea very early in the mornings and come back again around five in the evenings, hopefully fully loaded. It was wonderful to be able to buy really fresh and inexpensive fish at the local market too.

After painting two very tight paintings I decided to get out my trusty palette knife and cut loose and paint a picture without the constraints of total accuracy and where artistic licence is used! I love both styles equally, although I don't think that I could paint in one or the other style exclusively.

These beauties took me three days to complete and an immense amount of 'fiddling' to get the colours and the tones just right and finally I think this is finished at last.
Red oil paint tends to be translucent exept of course the cad. reds and the slowest drying colour too. I use alkyd paints for the most part as I love their fast drying times although they seem to be more translucent than ordinary oil paints with less covering power which can throw up some problems, but like all problems you have to figure out a solution. I am also trying out a new format and have had a number of boards cut in this elongated size and a few larger and smaller, I like to experiement with new things some work some don't!

8" x 8" oil on panel
Loving painting these shoes, can't seem to get enough of them! I will probably do a few more today.
The weather is lovely today which makes a change from all the grey dismal days we have been having I am longing for some warmer weather.

Loved painting the last 2 paintings of shoes so I thought I would give this lovely satin shoe a go, I am enjoying trying to paint with minimal strokes which goes against the grain but is a really good exercise for me especially as I'm an aweful 'fiddler' Don't forget to enter this months give-away comp see 2 posts ago.

I enjoyed yesterdays challenge so I thought that I would paint 2 shoes this time. It is harder than it looks to use a single stroke for each colour, I haven't mastered the technique yet but I'm practicing.
Don't forget to enter this months give-away see previous post!!!!
