Short Break

Well hubbies back after a couple of months away working so haven't had much time or inclination to paint, but saying that I have just started painting a portrait for the blog - 'Different Strokes from Different Folks' . We each got a photo of another artist taking part, to interpret as we like.
I was told recently by a relative that I paint very conservatively, I'm not sure what that's supposed to mean but I have a feeling that it was a criticism, well I guess that's just my style and the way I like to paint! So check out my blog soon I should have the painting done before Christmas.

1203 'Connemara Lakes' SOLD

12" x 14" oil on canvas panel

The myriad of lakes in the area of Connemara in Galway, each more picturesque than the other seemed to shine against the the rough surroundings, reflecting the Autumn skies. Such a rich place for artists to capture beautiful scenery. Maybe not as imposing as the alps, but these gentle Irish mountains were none-the-less pleasing to the eyes and senses.

1202 'Last of the Sun's Rays' (available)

8" x 10" oil on gessoed board, framed
This painting I have been working on for a while and I think I should have painted it larger, it was an exercise in perspective although what attracted me to the scene was the setting sun and the last light bouncing off the brickwork of the houses. Will I have the patience to paint this one again I dont know! The row of cottages is just around the corner from where I live in Ireland.

1201 'Yellow Glory' SOLD

6" x 6" oil on canvas panel

1200 'Single Beauty' (available)

6" x 6" = 15 x 15 cm oil on canvas panel
I have been working on a street scene all week on an 8 x 10 board and it has been driving me crazy because of the perspective, so I've put it aside until I get a bit more patience and painted this one and it just flowed off my brush and it revived my spirit after labouring on the other one for so long!

1199 'Made For Walking' SOLD

8" x 8" oil on canvas panel

Another entry for the blog 'Different Strokes from Different Folks' although when I saw this weeks photo, I was rather dissapointed I still decided to go ahead and paint them anyway. I have to say I really enjoyed doing this painting and decided to try and do a fairly loose painting which I find very difficult to do, I managed halfway to be loose and am happy with the results.

Thursday, 4 December 2008

'Alli' COMMISSION

8" x 10" oil on canvas board
This little cutie is eight months old and was commissioned by her grandmother as a Christmas present for her daughter. I started 2 new paintings this week and have just finished off this one started last week so it has been strange working on so many paintings at once. I should have another finished tomorrow.

' Elegance' SOLD

6" x 8" = 15 x 20.3 cms oil on canvas panel

Here's something different I fancied something tranquil and reflective! I am working on a small portrait commission of an 8 month old baby, when I'm half way through I always wonder whether the poor child will recognizable to the parents! the painting looks awful at this stage. It will take me at least 2 more painting sessions to put her right.

Saturday, 15 November 2008

'Long Shadows' (available)

This is this weeks painting for 'Different Strokes from Different Folks' It was painted mostly upside down, a very weird experience. This was a much more challenging exercise than I had expected but I learned a lot which was the whole idea of it. To see more takes on this painting go to the blog listed under my favourite artists.

Wednesday, 12 November 2008

'Dance Little Ballerina' SOLD

6" x 8" = 150 X 203 mms. oil on canvas panel

This was a 'fiddly' one but I got there in the end, just had trouble photographing it so there was no glare on it.

Tuesday, 11 November 2008

'Shadow Patterns' (available)

8" x 10" = 203 x 254 mms. oil on canvas panel $105+ p&p

A really busy painting I know I should have simplified it more I just could n't help myself! I painted this from a reference photo I shot in Spain in my friends beautiful tropical garden. When I took the photo, it was the striking shadows that caught my eye of the fronds of the palm tree.

Saturday, 8 November 2008

'Mudeford Harbour' (available)

12" x 16" = 30 x 40 cms oil on canvas $250 +p&p

This is technically not a daily painting but a larger one that I have been working on for a while and today I thought that it was time to finish it. I prefer to paint a picture in 1 or 2 sittings otherwise I tend to lose momentum and somehow it becomes tedious, but there we are finished at last. This is a scene from my recent visit back to England to the part of it, that I used to live in. I have to say I am quite homesick for there.

Friday, 7 November 2008

'Connemara Sheep'

12" X 10"= 30 x 25.5 cms oil on canvas $ 155 + p&p

I enjoyed painting the single sheep from my trip to Co Galway that I decided to paint on a larger canvas and a pair this time. They have interesting checkered markings on the legs and some of their faces (black & white) I'm sure their wool would knit up into a great sweater.

Monday, 3 November 2008

8" x 10" = 20.3 x 25.4 cms oil on canvas board $105 + p&p

6" x 8" = 15 x 20.3 cms

Thursday, 30 October 2008

'Connemara Ram' SOLD

8" x 10" = 20.3 x 25.4 cms oil on canvas board

Last week-end we took a trip up to Co. Galway and to the beautiful Connemara area. We were lucky with the weather and we only experienced a few showers of rain. This ram was among a bunch of very woolly black-faced sheep we encountered tripping down the road and looking like wooly toadstools from the back. This one posed for me by the side of the road against the trees bracken and granite rocks. The Connemara is full of lakes mountains and boggy areas, heather and gorse, really wild and full of scenes to paint. There are many artisans living in the area and is a place I am considering moving to.

Friday, 24 October 2008

'Cow-Boy' SOLD

6" x 6" = 15 x 15 cms oil on gessoed panel
I just loved painting the cow from yesterday and thought that I would portrait an Irish cow! I had a load of reference photos already, that I had taken on a walk up the road from my house, its cow country around here. He is not technically a cow but I think they call them steers or as in England - bullocks.

Thursday, 23 October 2008

'Nick in Black & White' NFS

11" x 14" acrylic on gessoed panel

This is another monochrome painting like the last one I painted of my daughter. I enjoyed painting that so much , I did another one of my nephew Nick on stage in his act as the great Elvis. It was a very hot night in Mojacar, Spain, a couple of summers ago and he had just done 2 costume changes and was coming to the end of his act.

Saturday, 18 October 2008

'Liza in Black & White' NFS

11" X 14" acrylic on gessoed panel
I started a larger painting on Thursday which needed to dry before I could carry on so on Friday I started this one and finished it after midnight then it was too late to photograph.
Well this one is very different to what I have done before, I thought that I needed a change, and I had such fun painting it and I am really pleased with the end result. The challenge for me was judging value, and as acrylics dry darker it wasn't always easy, but after a lot of squinting I got there.

Wednesday, 15 October 2008

10"x 12" oil on linen canvas

This painting was done using a photo from Susan Carlins blog, and as children are one of my favorite subjects I thought that I would give this one a go. It was a good one to get back into the swing of painting after my short holiday and I really enjoyed doing it.

Wednesday, 17 September 2008

'Bubble Reflections' (available)

6" x 8" oil on gessoed panel $65 + p&p

I have decided that I prefer to paint on canvas because the gessoed boards are so slick and don't hold on to the oil paint as well as canvas, but as I have a large supply of boards I guess I am going to have to use them up. Got fed up today with a larger painting so I painted over it in my frustration! and started something totally different with this little painting which didn't turn out too bad.

Monday, 15 September 2008

These are lilies growing in my friends' lovely garden with a tiny visitor stopping by for a moment

'The Rock of Dunamaise'

11" x 14" =28 x 35.5cms oil on gessoed panel

We went sight-seeing one Sunday afternoon and were blessed by a rare bit of sunshine, so armed with my camera we went to visit this old picturesque castle ruin set on the top of a hill, and I got a bunch of lovely photos. The views from the top of the hill were pretty too. The castle was surrounded by lots of wild flowers which made it look even more romantik.

Tuesday, 2 September 2008
